Summary:
Materials are at the core of 3D printing.
Understanding material properties and performance is critical to the success of 3D Systems.
We have a Materials Characterization Lab for plastic materials with capabilities that include mechanical testing, thermal analysis, rheology, FTIR and more.
We also execute reliability tests such as weathering and chemical compatibility to evaluate the long-term stability of our materials.
As 3D printing moves into manufacturing applications where the printed object will be used in a final product, our testing becomes even more essential.
It is also important to participate in organizations such as ASTM, as standards are updated and created for testing of 3D printed materials.
We seek a scientist or engineer with experience in polymer materials characterization and/or reliability testing to join our team.
This position requires more than just running tests, we need to understand why materials are performing the way they do so we can make design improvements.
Must be a self-starter, team player, able to change priorities quickly, and have excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities:
o Manage day to day testing from receiving requests to delivering final results.
This includes directing the work of technicians that support our team.
o Maintain instruments to ensure quality data.
This includes documented operating procedures, gauge studies, calibration, and maintenance as needed.
o Collaborate with internal and external customers to understand their experiments and offer technical analysis beyond the simple reporting of machine outputs o Collaborate with the materials characterization team which consists of specialists in mechanical testing, thermal analysis, and rheology o Follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment o Communicate effectively with team members and customers, both verbally and in writing o Represent 3DS at ASTM and possibly other standards organizations.
Create/demonstrate thought leadership in the characterization of 3D printed materials.
Education and Training:
o Required:
Bachelors degree in Materials Science and Engineering or Polymer Science.
Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemistry with relevant skillsets will be considered.
o Preferred:
MS or PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or Polymer Science.
o Similar qualifications in related fields such as Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering will be considered.

Experience:
o At least 3 years of experience with polymer materials characterization testing including reporting and interpreting the results highly desirable.
o Experience creating novel test methods o Experience managing an analytical work center, including directing the work of technicians o Familiarity with reliability testing o Hands-on experience in a lab environment, including working with chemicals that require personal protective equipment and careful lab practices o Representing a company at a standards organization.
Participating in, preferably leading study groups and/or projects at the standards organization.
o Experience with 3D printing, desirable.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
o Strong written and verbal communication skills o Strong organizational skills o Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced, self-directed environment, document detailed results, and communicate to peers and customers o Proficient in data collection and analysis including Excel and statistical packages such as Minitab.
o Comfortable working in a chemical development environment o Must be able to work with UV-curable acrylate systems o Attention to detail and thorough in completing tasks o Demonstrated ability to work effectively in and with teams.
